What is the difference between whey isolate and whey concentrate?
Whey concentrate and isolates go through a process to remove most of the carbs, fat and lactose from "regular unprocessed whey" from whole milk. This process is called filtering and micro-filtering. Both result in an almost pure protein.
A "concentrate" is 80% (+) protein and an "isolate" is 90% (+) protein. There is no other real difference between the two, except that isolates go through an extra filtering step to remove more fat and carbs. The protein quality is identical.
Concentrate Advantages: Concentrates are more economical per gram of protein. They have a low lactose level that is well tolerated by most lactose-sensitive people. They have trivial amounts of fat (mostly good fat which carries active protein) and carbs relative to your overall nutrient intake. This is one of the best-selling types of whey & consumed by most of the gym-goers & athletes!
Isolate Advantages: Isolates are virtually fat-free for those wishing to eliminate as much fat from their diet as possible. They are typically lactose free for those few individuals who are very sensitive to even low-lactose levels found in whey concentrates.
If a whey concentrate is 80% protein, why do some products say 100% whey protein?
The 80% refers to the concentration level of the protein that is in the ingredient - whey protein concentrate.
If a product is called 100% whey protein, this usually refers to the protein source used, meaning only whey protein is used, not egg, soy or milk protein. Therefore, a product that is named 100% whey protein (if it's from a concentrate) would contain about 80% protein.
If a whey protein concentrate is 80% protein, what is the other 20%?
Every protein powder, whether it's whey, soy or something else, has moisture. In fact, 5% of the total formula is water. Rest 15% contains naturally occurring minerals, added flavors, carbs & fats etc.

Whey protein or casein, which one is better?
Casein protein constitutes 80% of milk protein. It is recognized for its excellent amino acid content, slow-digestion, and anti-catabolic effect. It should be used at meals (can be combined with other proteins) and at bedtime. It should not be used when trying to accelerate amino acid absorption. Whereas, on the other hand, approximately 20% of the protein found in milk is Whey protein. Whey is the richest natural source of BCAAs (branch chain amino acids) and is usually the preferred choice for muscle building, weight loss, lean muscle and maintaining health. It increases protein synthesis, enhances immune function, antioxidant activity and fast absorption. It is best to consume Whey protein post workout when body is in catabolic stage and need fast absorbing protein for muscle repair & building.
Athletes and bodybuilders usually combine the two, consuming whey for quick protein replenishment post workouts and banking on Casein for its slow and steady protein release, leading to muscle recovery while they are asleep.
Why is whey protein a best-seller?
First, whey protein is a higher quality protein than regular whey, milk, egg, meat source or soy. And because whey is packed full of branched chain amino acids (BCAAs) - leucine, isoleucine, valine - it may help preserve lean muscle tissue between workouts or when dieting.
Second, whey protein is low in carbs, fat and calories which makes it perfect for dieters. Many use it first thing in the morning, between meals or right before bed. Others use it as a post-workout drink and mix it with carbohydrates like juice, fresh fruit or a high-carb powder.
Third, whey digests easier and much faster than all other proteins.
Fourth, since most of the lactose has been removed, it's popular with lactose-intolerant individuals.
Finally, it tastes pretty good, even in water. Good whey mixes instantly with a spoon, making it a popular protein choice anywhere. All types of people drink whey, from young to old, active to inactive.
Why do chocolate flavors have less protein than vanilla?
To achieve a rich chocolate taste, cocoa must be added along with a chocolate flavor. Vanilla only requires flavor for a good taste. Added cocoa, displaces some of the protein in a formula. Various brands deal with this lower protein situation in one of two ways. Either their chocolate product will have slightly less protein and slightly more carbs, or the serving size is increased to make the protein level constant between flavors, but there will be fewer servings.

Do I need to consume whey protein at a specific time of the day?
For any average person, protein takes longer to digest. So, it is preferable to consume Whey protein in the morning. Given the rapid absorption of whey, it is an ideal choice for post-workout intake (within an hour of the workout) to make the most out of the synergistic effect of insulin-amino acids.
Are some protein sources better than others?
The quality of protein varies with different protein supplements. Some of the high-quality, or “complete” protein sources include meat, fish, poultry, eggs, milk, cheese, yogurt, and whey protein. In fact whey protein has highest PDCAAS (a measure of protein quality as suggested by international bodies like WHO, FAO etc.). These foods supply all the essential amino acids that your body needs to build and maintain muscle and to function properly. Protein found in most plant foods, including legumes, seeds, nuts, vegetables, and grain products is considered “incomplete” protein because it lacks some of the essential amino acids needed daily. Protein digestibility varies across food sources and is an important factor in deciding the quality of the protein source.
Can people who are lactose intolerant consume whey protein?
If you are lactose intolerant, or are very sensitive to lactose- the natural sugar found in milk products, then you may consider (in consultation with nutritionist) Whey protein isolate which contains very little lactose.
I am a vegetarian. Should I consume whey protein?
Yes, you can consume it. Avvatar is a 100% vegetarian product. It is a very tough job to acquire all the essential proteins for a vegetarian. Proteins are most commonly found in animal sources like egg, meat (red and white meats), fish, etc. Whey protein is a complete protein i.e. it contains all amino acids and has PDCAAS of 1.0. It is sourced from milk. So, for a vegetarian, Whey protein becomes essential as their protein intake is very limited. You should check for the process (whether using Rennet sourced from animal or micro enzymes) for manufacturing whey.
Can I take whey protein in combination with other supplements?
Yes, Whey protein can be stacked with a number of other supplements like creatine, dextrose, casein and others. But if you are planning to stack other supplements with Whey protein, it is recommended to consult a doctor or a certified trainer/nutritionist before doing so.
